FIRST EDITION. Small 8vo. 6.5 x 5 inches. 137 pp. All text within double decorative borders. Bound in original dark green cloth, gilt, decorated with gilt and blind stamped title blocks. Board edges bevelled. Boards have damp stain on front and wear at corners and at head and tail of spine, which is faded; occasional scattered foxing, but otherwise a good interior. Illustrated by 5 engraved plates, including frontispiece and and by chromolithograph vignette (of gold nugget) engraved title. Decorated by title page and tailpiece vignettes and by initials. A popular practical guide for landowners, prospectors and miners on the identification and assaying of minerals, ores and gemstones with chapters on mineral springs and oil wells and on the discovery of gold in California in 1848. By James Orton (1830-77), geologist, naturalist and explorer of South America. He was professor of natural history at Vassar College, New York, from 1869 until he failed to return from Lake Titicaca in 1877. Scarce first edition of this attractively illustrated volume.
