Children's Illustrated Classics version of a book which created a new genre of school fiction. The 1857 first edition of Tom Brown's School Days was published anonymously, but the identity of the author was soon known. Thomas Hughes (1822-1896) was born at Uffington, Berkshire and attended Rugby School under its reforming headmaster, Thomas Arnold (1795-1842), from 1834 until he went up to Oxford in 1842. He began writing Tom Brown in order to explain school life to his eldest son and the book always remained his chief claim to fame. With the artwork of Salomon Van Abbe (1883-1955), Dutch born artist, etcher and illustrator.
