8vo. 8.75 x 5.75 inches. lxx + 402 pp. Bound in original red cloth, gilt, in unclipped dust wrapper. Minor wear to extremities with sunned spine and slightly browned flyleaves; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 12 pages of black and white plates. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. Extracts relating to the Reform Act of 1832 from the diaries of Denis Le Marchant (1795-1874), colonial administrator, army officer and Governor of Newfoundland; Edward John Walhouse Littleton, Baron Hatherton (1791-1863), politician; and Edward Law, Earl of Ellenborough (1790-1871). The illustrations are reproductions of caricatures by 'H. B,' i.e. John Doyle (1797-1868), Irish political cartoonist. The editor, Arthur Aspinall (1901-72) was a Yorkshire born historian who graduated from the University of Manchester in 1919. He was Lecturer from 1931, and subsequently Professor of Modern History, 1947-65, at the University of Reading. Aspinall specialised in editing the political correspondence of this period, including the letters of George IV.
