8vo. 9 x 6 inches. 303 + [1] pp. colophon. Decorated by device on title page. Bound in original orange cloth, gilt, with gilt block of device on front board. Fore and lower edges rough cut. A little wear to extremities and sunning of spine, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by portrait frontispiece and by 16 pages of black and white plates, including facsimile. Biography of George Payne Rainsford James (1801?-60), historian and prolific historical novelist, who also served as British Consul in Norfolk, later at Richmond, Virginia, 1852 and Consul General at Venice from 1860. The book includes a chronological list of his works, 1828-64 with 91 items.
