Notes
The classic work by John Lothrop Motley, The Rise of the Dutch Republic was the first part of his history of the Netherlands to 1609. Motley (1814-77) was born in Massachusetts but moved to England towards the end of his life and also served as a US diplomat. This title was first published in 1856 and its popularity led to the appearance of many editions. A very handsomely bound set by Bickers.
