Small 8vo. 6.25 x 4.25 inches. 382 pp. + [2] pp. publisher's series list. Bound in original red cloth, gilt, with blind stamped borders enclosing publisher's device on front board. Hinges weak and extremities worn, including corners and head and tail of spine Slight browning of flyleaves and some foxing of edges and preliminaries, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by frontispiece and by 4 maps and charts. Decorated by title and publisher's device on its verso. Nelson's Library edition of the famous spy adventure by Erskine Childers 1870-1922), English born imperialist who became an ardent Irish nationalist During the Irish Civil War he was executed by the Irish Free State for the possession of an illegal weapon. The 1903 novel filled with authentic detail from the author's own sailing experiences in the Frisian Islands was highly influential with its warning of a seaborne German invasion of Britain, and has retained its popularity ever since.
