Incredible work of scholarship, as a study of the handling of written communication in one area, examining how national 'general principles' were adapted and carried out locally. The illustrations show how letters from each period looked and how they were charged for. Much use is made of early maps and road books and although biased towards this particular route, most of the information applies to any of the major post roads and this work is a storehouse of social and local information.
