8vo. 6.25 x 4.25 inches. xiv + 417 pp. + [1] pp. colophon. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. Bound in contemporary half dark blue cloth over blue boards; spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt with contrasting title label, gilt. Minor wear to board edges, spine sunned and some foxing of preliminary and end pages, scattered elsewhere; otherwise a very good clean copy, handsomely bound. Bookplate. Illustrated by engraved frontispiece and by text figures. Prefaced by the introduction to the first and second series of the original edition of the Ingoldsby Legends which first appeared in book form in 1840, and 1842 respectively. Richard Harris Barham (1788-1845), Church of England clergyman, was born in Canterbury, his father living in Tappington Everard House (see the frontispiece) His knowledge of Kentish legends was developed during his residences as a curate in Ashford and Westwell, and subsequently in the livings of Snargate and Warehorne, until he moved to London in 1821. The pocket edition was first published in 1869.
