FIRST ENGLISH EDITION THUS. 8vo. 7.5 x 5 inches. 156 + [1] + [1] pp. colophon. Bound in brown cloth, gilt, in unclipped dust wrapper, with some staining and edge chips and small missing sections, including at head and tail of sunned spine. A little browning of flyleaves and occasional traces of scattered foxing; otherwise a very good copy. The last story Lawrence worked upon, bringing it to its final perfection shortly before his death. It presents an alternative view of the Crucifixion and Resurrection. Lawrence's preferred title for the work was The Escaped Cock and a limited edition under this title was published in Paris in 1929 (uniting Part One, first published as a short story in a periodical in 1928 with Part Two turning it into a short novel.
