SECOND EDITION (First Illustrated). 8vo. 8 x 5.75 inches. xii + 219 pp. Bound in original green cloth, gilt; front boards with black decorated borders enclosing gilt pictorial block and with bevelled edges. Top edge gilt. Green patterned endpapers. A little wear to extremities, including corners, lower edge of board and head and tail of spine. Slight browning of flyleaves and faint impression from removed pressed flower between second and third free endpapers; otherwise a very good clean copy. Illustrated by frontispiece. protected by tissue guard and by 41 text figures, from wood engravings by Charles Whymper. First illustrated book edition of The Gamekeeper At Home, by the nature writer, Richard Jefferies (1848-1887), which first appeared as articles in The Pall Mall Gazette of 1878. A series of nine essays examines the keeper, his family and the environment of his labours, the animals he works with and protects and his foes, including birds and beasts of prey and trespasses and poachers. A full account of the origins of the first edition of 1878 is supplied by Miller and Matthews (p. 119-125) and of this illustrated edition (B8.8, p.134-138). Illustrated by Charles Whymper (1853-1941), painter and engraver.
