Bound in presentation calf, gilt. with gilt borders on boards, enclosing, on front, block of The Polytechnic School, spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt, with contrasting title label, gilt. All edges and endpapers marbled. Some wear to extremities and sunning of page edges; otherwise a very good copy. Presentation certificate of The Polytechnik Day School, Regent Street, 1891 on front pastedown. Illustrated by 32 engraved frontispiece plates. English version of the tenth of fifty four Voyages extraordinaires adventure novels published 1863-1905, in the lifetime of Jules Verne (1828-1905). The first edition Le Pays des fourrures appeared 1873 and in the UK with the English translation by Henry Frith (1840-1910) by Routledge. It relates the adventures of a Hudson's Bay Company expedition of 1859 with the aim of establishing a fort in Arctic Canada. An earthquake sees them on an iceberg drifting into the Bering Strait before their rescue. A handsome Polytechnic School presentation binding.
