Small 8vo. 6.25 x 4.25 inches. Unpaginated. [72] pp. facsimile printed in black letter. Bound in black cloth, gilt. Rough cut edges. Minor wear to extremities and flyleaves browned; otherwise a very good clean copy. Pictorial bookplate of John Raymond Danson, designed by Stephen Gooden. Illustrated by engraved facsimile title page. Facsimile Reprint of a political and religious allegory attributed to Robert Crowley (c.1518-78), poet, stationer and publisher, polemical author and a Protestant minister, who had been a Marian exile during the reign of Mary Tudor. After the Elizabethan settlement, he was a prominent protester against the wearing of clergy vestments. Introduction by Wilfred Alexander Marsden (1878-1949). This copy was owned by Lieutenant Colonel John Raymond Danson (1893-1975), who served in both World Wars, and has his bookplate, designed by Stephen Frederick Gooden (1892-1955), a prominent designer of bookplates. The only copy of the original was formerly located at Ayscoughfee Hall, Spalding, Lincs, a grade one listed building in the Fen country.
