FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 5.25 x 7.5 inches. xxiii + [i] + 400 pp. + [4] pp. publisher's advertisements. Bound in original red cloth, gilt, with gilt borders enclosing roundels depicting Sylvie and Bruno. All edges gilt. Some wear to extremities, including at head (with headband repair) and tail of spine, which is sunned, but otherwise a very good clean copy. Pictorial bookplate of Joseph and Edith Freeman, Crockham Hill (Edenbridge, Kent). Illustrated by 46 engravings, 10 full page, including frontispiece. The last (with its 1889 sequel) considerable work issued by Charles Dodgson which features parallel plots of life in the real world and fantasy, thus combining serious subjects concerning life and science into this fairy tale; there are useful cross references to these concepts in the index. Cleverly illustrated by Harry Furniss (1854-1925), who had previously worked for the Illustrated London News and Punch before concentrating on book work, including sets of Dickens and Thackeray. Furmiss and Carroll worked together on the illustrations and text, but difficulties were caused by the author exerting control over the pictorial aspects. (Williams and Madan, 217).
