FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 9 x 6 inches. 258 pp. Bound in original light yellow cloth, gilt, in price clipped pictorial dust wrapper, with chips at head and tail of spine, which is sunned. Deckled fore edge. Top edge gilt. A little wear to extremities and spotting of edges, but otherwise a very good clean copy. !946 gift inscription on verso of first free endpaper. Illustrated by 9 lithograph plates in grey monotone, numbered in text, by Hans Tisdall. An anthology of songs and poetry from English drama, divided into periods from medieval to the nineteenth century, with indexes of dramatists and plays and of first lines. By Frederick Smith Boas (1862-1957), scholar of early modern English drama. Beautifully illustrated by Harold Tisdall (1911-97), German born artist, book and textile designer who, after an early career in Munich, arrived in England by 1940, working for the Ministry of Information during the war. Published by the Cresset Press and printed by the Shenval Press.
