8vo. 7.25 x 5 inches. vi + [ii] 322 pp. + [2] pp. publisher's advertisements. Bound in original pictorial green and gilt blocks, with gilt titles. All edges gilt. A little sunning of boards with some wear at corners and head and tail of spine; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 24 colour plates, including frontispiece (protected by tissue guard) and 21 black and white plates in text. Decorated by publisher's device on verso of of half title. 1918 gift inscription on verso of first free endpaper. The third novel of George Eliot (1819-80), first published in 1861. The setting moves from northern England to Warwickshire, to which Silas Marner a linen weaver has moved after a false accusation of theft is made against him. Illustrated by Hugh Thomson (1860-1920), Irish artist, who pioneered the late nineteenth century Cranford School of illustration, employing a carefully researched pre-industrial mode of pen drawings, also including colour.
