Bound in original cream cloth, gilt, spine with contrasting black title label, gilt, in price clipped dust wrapper, which has edge wear, including slight loss at head of spine. Boards and edges foxed, and scattered elsewhere, largely confined to margins; otherwise a very good copy. Signature on front pastedown. Illustrated by 10 black and white plates, including frontispiece, 17 maps and by tables. Reprint of the social history of Russia up to 1917. By Prince Dmitry Petrovich Svyatopolk-Mirsky (1890-1939), political and literary historian, who served in the imperial army during the First World War and then with Denikin's white army. He emigrated to Britain in 1921, where he taught at the University of London and published two key works on Russian literature. He joined the CPGB and obtained permission to return to the USSR in 1932. After an unwise encounter in Moscow in 1937 with his friend the British historian, E. H. Carr, he was arrested as a spy and died in in a Gulag labour camp in 1939. Edited by Charles Gabriel Seligman (1873-1940), ethnologist, who held the chair of Ethnology at the LSE 1913-34 and published The Races of Africa in 1930.
