8vo. 7.75 x 5.5 inches. [viii] + 542 + [1] pp. + [1] pp. colophon. Bound in original blue cloth, gilt, with gilt block of cross on front board. Extremities a little worn including head and tail of spine, which has some fading, and spotting on front board. Flyleaves browned and page edges foxed; otherwise a very good copy. Gift inscription on third free endpaper. Illustrated by portrait frontispiece with facsimile signature, protected by tissue guard, and by facsimile on verso of title. Early English translation of the internationally famous novel, by the Nobel Prize winning author, Henryk Sienkiewicz (1846-1916), best known in his native Poland for his historical novels set in the time of the seventeenth century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Quo Vadis, first published in Warsaw in book form in 1896, takes place in ancient Rome at the time of the emperor Nero around AD 64. It relates the persecution of early Christians and features many actual historical characters, culminating in the martyrdom of St Peter. English translation by Jeremiah Curtin (1835-1906), US ethnographer and translator of several Sienkiewicz novels.
