TEN VOLUMES. Small 8vo. Total pagination, 3520 pp.,an average of 352 pp. per vol. Title pages in red and black. Bound in soft green leather, gilt, with gilt blocks, with spines now faded to brown. Pictorial bookplates of Matt Gosset, 1893 in all vols., pasted over imprint note on front pastedowns, except in vol. one, which also has manuscript note there. Extremities worn, including corners and heads and tails of spines, but otherwise a very good set. Illustrated by ten sepia frontispieces protected by tissue guards. Decorated by title pages and by series dvices. Plutarch (AD 146-c.120) was a Greco-Roman philosopher and historian from Chaeronea. The Parallel Lives paired Greeks and Romans together and forty six of them (twenty three pairs), out of the original forty eight survive. This Dent edition is based on the English translation from the French of Jacques Amyot, (1513-83), by Sir Thomas North (1535-1601?). Plutarch's work as translated by North, provided important source material for Shakespeare's plays set in the ancient period, and especially for Antony and Cleopatra.
