Scene showing the locals in the samoan archipelago attacking voyagers from a french expedition, lead by navigator laperouse as they disembark from their boats. captain?de langle, scientist?robert de lamanon, and approximately thirty samoans were amongst those killed. news of the massacre reached europe, where it was sensationalised and widely discussed.
Item Description
Print, copper plate engraving on paper, 16 x 10.5 inches. Some staining, loss and small tears to top edge. Designed by Nicolas Ozanne (1728-1811), engraved by Francois Dequerauviller (1745_1817). From the Voyages of La P?rouse who set sail from France in 1785 to continue the discoveries of Captain Cook. He was shipwrecked in 1788 but his narrative, maps, and views survived and were published in 1797. Following the attack, La P?rouse named the site "Massacre Island" and the nearby bay "Massacre Bay," a name that endures to this day.
