FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 8.5 x 5.75 inches. xii + 384 pp.+ numbered plates I-XVIII (including IV A and IV B). Errata slip tipped in. Bound in patterned dark blue cloth, gilt. A little wear and staining of extremities, including corners and head and tail of spine. A few small ink and pencil margin notes, but otherwise a very good clean copy. 1874 signature on first free endpaper. Illustrated by 19 plates, of which 15 are folding, and including maps, charts, etc., and by numerous tables in text. A detailed survey of hydrology, relating to the flow of water, including rainfall, underground sources and tides, with numerous charts and hydraulic tables. By Nathaniel Beardmore (1816-72), member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, who received his professional education and began his career in the Plymouth area (see Graces' Guide website for a detailed account). The Manuel was developed from his Hydraulic Tables of 1850 and subsequent years.
