4to. 10 x 8 inches. xviii + 241 + [1]. Bound in original blue cloth, gilt, with decorative gilt blocks on front board and spine. Bevelled board edges. Rough cut page edges. Extremities worn, including corners and head and tail of spine. Scattered foxing, including page and margin edges, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by frontispiece and by text figure engravings, including plans. Decorated by headpiece vignettes and initials. A well illustrated topographical survey of Lincoln's Inn, including the history and buildings of this Inn of Court, of Lincoln's Inn Fields and of various adjacent areas. The Fields, the largest public square in London was first laid out in the 1630s, acquired by London County Council in and opened to the public in 1895, and is now part of the London Borough of Camden. By Charles William Heckethorn (1829-1902), Swiss born, naturalised British author, who wrote on secret societies and on London. Alfred Beaver also illustrated Memorials of Old Chelsea (1892).
