Small 8vo. 7 x 4 inches. [ix] + [i] + 139 + [1] pp. Title page in red and black. Bound in buff spine over grey boards with yapp fore edge; spine in compartments with raised bands and black printed paper title label. Deckled edges. Small missing section to top of one of yapp edges, a few small stains on boards and front flyleaves browned; otherwise a very good copy. Decorated by title page and head and tailpiece vignettes. A thinly disguised fictional account, written in the form of dialogue and letters, of the author's unrequited infatuation for his landlord's daughter, Sarah Walker, first published anonymously in 1823. William Hazlitt, painter, journalist and essayist (1778-1830) was born in Maidstone, Kent, the son of a Unitarian minister. Introduction by William Marion Reedy (1862-1920), St. Louis newspaper editor and promoter of new literary talent.
