Notes
Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and a Hop Intelligence and Corn Exchange section which supplies corn and other commodity prices. A slave insurrection in Demerara was suppressed by the West India Regiment. In London a young man who attempted to carry out his butcher's round, 'the eyes remaining closed the whole of the time,' was treated by by being bled of thirty two ounces and given a 'strong opening medicine.' The same remedy of bleeding was also applied to a young woman who was in a trance so deep that she was thought to be dead. In Kent fifty fleeces of long wool were stolen from the granary of Thomas Pilcher of Cheriton, a chisel formed from a file used to effect the entrance being available for inspection at the Library, Hythe.
