Notes
Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and a Hop Intelligence and Corn Exchange section which supplies corn and other commodity prices. A meeting was held at Maidstone within a square of wagons in front of the Town Hall, to discuss the Petition to Parliament of the Freeholders of the County on agricultural distress with speeches by Sir Edward Knatchbull and Mr. Cobbett, the latter meeting some opposition with cries of 'No Cobbett.' The Commons continued to debate the Corn Importation Bill. Knatchbull presented a petition from the hop planters of Canterbury and east Kent against a bill to alter the mode of marking the bags and pockets of hops (apparently to preserve the good name of the (Kent hops...superior to those of Sussex'). The motion was withdrawn.
