Notes
Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and Hop Intelligence and a Corn Exchange section which supplies corn and other commodity prices. From abroad came new of an 'important Revolution' in Naples and of the activities of Bolivar in Quito. At home the Queen Caroline affair, relating to Caroline of Brunswick, the estranged wife of the new King, George IV, who returned to England in an unsuccessful attempt, despite much popular support, to take up her position as Queen still continued to preoccupy Parliament. A woman gave birth on board a steam yacht between Sheppey and Reculver, en route from London to Margate and was attended by the inevitable medical gentleman who happened to be on board. The husband bought a round of drinks for all the passengers but there was some uncertainty in which parish the child should be registered.
