Notes
Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and a Corn Exchange section which supplies corn and other commodity prices. News from abroad noted another possible attempt to liberate Bonaparte from St Helena and in Chile, Lord Cochrane's squadron, armed with Congreve rockets, sailed out to attack the Spanish fleet in Callao Roads. In Kent the late severe frost had caused heavy losses of oysters in the creeks of the Swale and Medway and in the Whitstable and Seasalter grounds In Gravesend a ground collapse revealed ancient chalk pits thought to be of Roman origin. Farmers and carmen were reminded of the law requiring ownership details to be clearly displayed on the bodies of their vehicles as informers were reporting unmarked vehicles to the magistrates in the hope of reward.
