Some foxing of endpapers and edges, but otherwise a very good copy. Loosely inset: undated newspaper book review by Harold Nicholson. Illustrated by 7 black and white plates, including frontispiece. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. Autobiographical account of the secret ministry of John Gerard (1564-1637), a Jesuit priest in England during the penal times. It relates his visits to Catholic households from 1588, hiding in priest holes, betrayal, arrest, imprisonment and torture in the Tower, 1594-97 and eventual return to the Continent after the Gunpowder Plot, where his superiors instructed him to write this account. Translated from the Latin by the Jesuit priest and scholar, Philip Caraman (1911-98). Introduction by Catholic author, Graham Greene.
