8vo. 7.5 x 5 inches. xviii + [ii] + 326 pp. + [22] pp. publisher's catalogue. Bound in decorated pictorial binding, gilt. All edges gilt. Green pictorial endpapers. Minor wear to extremities, including corners and head and tail of spine and spine darkened; otherwise a very good copy. 1920 signature on 2nd free endpaper. Illustrated by 12 black and white plates, including frontispiece. The book categorises fairies as trooping and solitary and goes on to examine other mystical phenomena, including ghosts, witches, saints kings and queens, etc. This early work by W B. Yeats reflects his lifelong interest in mysticism and Irish legends and folk culture. First published in 1888 as Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry in 1888 by Walter Scott, Ltd., and under this title in 1892. A handsomely bound copy with the artwork of James Torrance (1859-1918), Scottish artist and illustrator.
