Small 8vo. 6.5 x 4 inches. xxiv +119 pp. Bound in original calf with gilt borders on boards, spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt. A little wear to extremities, including corners and head and tail of spine, which has title almost worn away. Light foxing of page edges and flyleaves, but otherwise a very good clean copy. Satirical verses of a political nature written in the form of eight letters, followed by individual poems collected under the subtitle Trifles. Thomas Moore (1779-1852) was a prolific Irish Catholic author whose Irish writings were of a romantic nationalist nature (e.g. the influential Melodies, 1808-14 which included his famous verse, 'The Harp that once through Tara's Halls'). In England his satirical work favoured the Whig cause against the Tories with virulent attacks on Lord Castlereagh. This work, first published in 813, went into numerous editions.
