8vo. 8.5 x 5.75 inches. ix + [i] + 309 + [1] pp. Bound in original blue cloth, with gilt and black titles. Extremities worn, including corners, edges and head and tail of spine. Some foxing of edges and preliminaries and occasionally in margins; otherwise a very good copy. Gift inscription initials on second free endpaper. Illustrated by 8 black and white photographic plates, including frontispiece. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. The reminiscences, including his war service, of the merchant marine sea captain, Bertam Fox Hayes (1864-1941), who spent his career with the White Star Line from 1889 until he retired as its Commodore in 1924. He captained troopships in the South African and First World Wars including RMS Olympic in the Dardanelles campaign, and in her rammed and sank a German U-boat in the English Channel in 1918. His last command was the RMS Majestic former German liner and at the time the world's largest ship.
