FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 9 x 6.5 inches. 256 pp. Bound in original dark green cloth, gilt. A little wear of lower board edges and slight foxing of front endpaper; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 22 pages of black and white plates, including photographs and maps, some folding, and by 28 text figures, including maps and plans. Pictorial endpapers. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. In a study of historical geography the author describes six journeys through the English landscape. He discusses parish boundaries, Elizabethan villages and market places, deserted villages and medieval new towns and parks, relating archival documents to still existing features and structures. Maurice Beresford (1920-2005), landscape and urban historian, was Professor of Economic History at the University of Leeds, 1959-85 He pioneered the study of deserted medieval villages publishing The Lost Villages of England in 1954; New Towns of the Middle Ages appeared in 1967.
