Large 8vo. 9 x 6.75 inches. 310 pp. Bound in original blue cloth, gilt, in pictorial dust wrapper, which has some edge wear with small chips and inside foxing. Spine a little sunned and foxing of flyleaves, preliminaries and fore edge; otherwise a very good copy. 1954 gift inscription on first free endpaper. Illustrated by 3 maps, including whole page, population chart and by 49 black and white and colour plates, including frontispiece. Account of the author's tours in the Middle East, with a particular emphasis on ancient sites on ancient sites. Those visited include Byblos, Baalbek, Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan and Petra, Damascus, Palmyra, North Syria, Baghdad, Persia, the Nile and the Pyramids and Knossos and Crete. By Julian Huxley (1887-1975), whose grandfather was Thomas Henry Huxley, supporter of Charles Darwin and the theory of natural selection. Huxley, an evolutionary biologist, was one of Britain's leading scientists. He was a humanist, eugenicist, internationalist and traveller who served as first Director-General of UNESCO, 1946-48.
