Illustrated throughout in colour, black and white, etc. Decorated by title page vignette. Very well illustrated history of the Folkestone fishing industry until the present day. It highlights the many changes, both in the design of the boats and in the fishing methods they employ. The book describes the building of the first stone harbour, the demolition of the old fishermen's cottages in the 1930s, the annual Blessing of the Fisheries, net making, Life and Work on the Stade, Whelk Barrows, Disasters and Mishaps, and illustrates The Present Fleet 2020. Appendices include the nicknames of Folkestone Men, Notable Catches, species of fish and shellfish caught locally, Selling the Fish and Fish Merchants, Local References from history books, town guides and newspapers, Dialect Words, Sail Makers, The Folkestone Boats (by registration from FE.1 to FE.369 with their original names) and a Glossary and bibliography.
