A little wear to extremities, spine slightly darkened and occasional scattered foxing; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated throughout by engravings, including frontispieces. Three works of juvenile literature, originally written around the 1870s, bound together. A Great emergency also includes the tales, A Very ill-tempered Family, Our Field and Madam Liberality. By Juliana Horatia Gatty Ewing (1841-85), pioneer writer of children's fiction, her works being imbued with her strong Anglican religious faith. Jan of the Windmill originally appeared in 1873 as The Miller's Thumb in Aunt Judy's Magazine, which she edited from 1866. A Flat-Iron for a Farthing was illustrated by Helen Paterson Allingham (1884-1926), famous watercolour artist and illustrator.
