12mo. 6.5 x 4.25 inches. 208 pp. Bound in contemporary fine calf, boards decorated gilt and blind stamping with dentelles; spine in compartments, with raised bands, decorated gilt, with contrasting title label. Inner. Marbled edges and endpapers. A little wear to extremities, including corners, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by vignette title and by 4 plates, s=drawn by Richard Westall, R.A and engraved by J. H. Robinson. A collection of sixty essays by Francis Bacon. The subjects covered are wide ranging and include Truth, Marriage and single Life, Love, Boldness, Plantations, Building, Gardens and Followers and Friends. The prefaces to the first and second editions of the Essays are included. This finely printed Chiswick Press edition of 1822 was first published in 1812. The illustrations were drawn by the artist, Richard Westall, R.A. (1765-1830) and engraved by John Henry Robinson (1786-1871)
