TWO VOLUMES. 8vo. 7.25 x 5 inches. Vol. I, xxvii + [i] + 276 pp.; Vol. II, vi + 271 pp. Title pages in red and black. Bound in contemporary dark green cloth with handwritten paper spine title labels. Some wear to extremities, browning of flyleaves and some occasional foxing and stains; otherwise a very good set. Symbolic bookplates. Illustrated by engraved text figures. Decorated by headpiece vignettes, by initials, and by publisher's device on title page. Twenty five essays on various categories of surnames, with additional chapters and appendices on rebuses, canting arms, punning family mottoes, anagrams, inn signs, common names, The Roll of Battel Abbey (with transcripts from the copies of Leland, Holinshed and John Foxe), and on Latinized Surnames. Mark Antony Lower (1813-76) was a schoolteacher, antiquarian and historian of Sussex, author of The Sussex Martyrs (1851) and A Compendious History of Sussex (1870), and joint founder of the Sussex Archaeological Society in 1844.
