Notes

Thomas selected the finest writing of his own generation and from the past, as well as contributing at least three essays to each volume. They were issued as a periodical edited by Thomas. At 6-monthly intervals the title pages and contents were sent to subscribers and at the end of the year the collected issues were sent to the publishers to be collated and bound into attractive binding cases. Large numbers of subscribers failed to complete their collection or did not send them for binding, hence the scarcity of sets, in particular this set having survived in fantastic condition.
