8vo. 9.75 x 5.75 inches. xx + 75 pp. +[1] + A-K + [1] pp. + 138 pp. plates. Bound in brown cloth, gilt, with pictorial gilt block on front board. A fine copy. Illustrated by 138 pages of plates all black and white except colour frontispiece. Catalogue of a British Museum loan exhibition to commemorate the fourth centenary of the death of Jean Grolier (c.1479-1565). Born in Lyons, he held office in the Duchy of Milan and became one of the four Treasurers-General of France. A bibliophile and book collector, he appreciated richly decorated bindings. This exhibition is based on the parts of his library now held in Britain and Ireland. It was arranged and the catalogue compiled by Howard M. Nixon (1909-83), historian of bookbinding, head of Rare Book Collections at the Museum from 1966 and Lecturer at the School of Library Studies, UCL, 1959-76.
