Ex-Library (Oxford University Institute of Colonial Studies) copies with labels and stamps and paper shelf marks on spines. Some wear to extremities and occasional stains, but generally clean interiors. Illustrated by 3 maps, including frontispieces and one folding, musical notations and by 29 black and white photographic plates Very detailed reports of the cultural and linguistic research of the Ibo peoples of Nigeria, carried out by Northcote Whitridge Thomas (1868-1936), appointed first Government Anthropologist by the Colonial Office in 1909. As a result of his travels and studies in Nigeria and Sierra Leone, he assembled large collections of material, which are held by a number of British institutions. A man of eccentric habits, he was sent home c.1915 and later interested himself in the occult and in psychical research.
