TWO VOLUMES. 8vo. 8.5 x 5.75 inches. Part I, 163 + [1] pp.; Part II, viii + [ii] + 251 + [1] pp. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt. Ex-Library (Oxford University Institute of Colonial Studies) copies with labels and stamps and paper shelf marks on spines. Some wear to extremities with occasional stains and flyleaves browned, but generally clean interiors. Illustrated by folding map frontispiece and by genealogical tables, including 2 folding. Reports of cultural and linguistic research into the Edo speaking peoples of Nigeria, including texts of other languages of the Edo family, carried out by Northcote Whitridge Thomas (1868-1936), appointed first Government Anthropologist by the Colonial Office in 1909. As a result of his travels and studies in Nigeria and Sierra Leone, he assembled large collections of material, which are held by a number of British institutions. A man of eccentric habits, he was sent home c.1915 and later interested himself in the occult and in psychical research.
