12mo. 6.25 x 4 inches. 126 pp. Bound in original tree calf. Spine rebacked, in compartments, decorated by gilt bands, with contrasting red and black title labels, gilt. Some age related wear, including browning of title page and occasional scattered foxing; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by engraved frontispiece dated 1802. An early nineteenth century edition of An Essay on Man, a long poem in heroic couplets in the form of four epistles, by Alexander Pope (1688-1744). The work, first published between 1732 and 34 justifies the ways of God to man. The universe is a divinely ordained work of God in which man takes his place as the best of all possible worlds. The essay is preceded by a short life of the author and is followed by two poems not by Pope.
