8vo. 8.75 x 5.75 inches. xvii + [i] + 109 pp. Bound in red cloth with black titles, in unclipped pictorial dust wrapper, which is foxed with sunned spine. Light foxing of edges, flyleaves and preliminaries, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 77 text figures, including maps. Pictorial endpapers with diagrams. The twentieth century history of Adventurers Fen in the Cambridgeshire Fenland, relating a history of limited drainage, industrial use for turf and reed cutting, conversion to agriculture and it's inter-war regression to fenland and then, after 1940, its systematic drainage and clearance for farming. Eric Arnold Roberts Ennion (1900-81), artist, illustrator, ornithologist and author, worked as a GP at Burwell, a village on the fen edge and includes his observations on the many bird species he studied on the former fen. First published in a shorter edition, partly based on earlier periodical articles, in 1942.
