Proof copy (text only, without index or illustrations) of the biography of Henry Addington, First Viscount Addington (1752-1844)( who was both preceded and followed by WIlliam Pitt), Tory Prime Minister, 1801-04. In 1802 he negotiated the Treaty of Amiens, which obtained a short period of peace with Napoleonic France. He later served as Home Secretary, 1812-22. By Philip Ziegler (1929-2023), historian, biographer and journalist, who previously worked as a diplomat and publisher's editor.
