4to. 10 x 7.75 inches. 240 pp. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt, with gilt block on front board, in unclipped pictorial dust wrapper, which has small chip in centre of spine. Slight wear and sunning of spine and board edges, but otherwise a very good copy. 1983 gift inscription on verso of first free endpaper. Illustrated throughout in colour, including portrait frontispiece. Globe map endpapers. Marianne North (1830-90) was a botanical artist and plant and landscape painter The text is an abridged version of Recollections of a Happy Life (1892) and includes a selection of her paintings of flowers and plants and describes her travels in Canada, the USA, Jamaica, Brazil, Japan, Borneo, Ceylon, India, Australia, and South Africa. She exhibited her work in London, having a gallery constructed at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew to house the exhibits.
