8vo. &.25 x 5 inches. xxxii + 286 pp. + [2] pp. publisher's advertisements. Bound in original dark green cloth, gilt, front board and spine decorated gilt. All edges gilt. Some wear to extremities, including corners and head and tail of spine. Foxing of flyleaves, but otherwise a very good clean copy. 1901 gift inscription on first free endpaper. Illustrated throughout by 48 pen and ink drawings, including frontispiece, many whole page numbered in text. Decorated by title, contents pages and chapter heading vignettes, by initials and by publisher's device on verso of half title. Two novels in one, A Kentucky Cardinal and its sequel, Aftermath, originally first published separately in 1894 and 1895. James Lane Allen (1849-1925) was a US novelist and short story writer from Kentucky, who also had a teaching career. Illustrated by Hugh Thomson ((1860--1920), Irish born founder of the 'Cranford School' of historical illustration. His well researched work appeared in numerous English classic novels published from the mid-1880s.
