THREE VOLUMES. 8vo. 9 x 6 inches. Vol. I, xxxviii + 675 pp.; Vol. II, [iv] + 670 pp.; Vol. III, xxiii + [i] + 30 + [1] pp. Bound in original dark blue cloth, gilt (Vol. III in green). Top edges rough cut. A little wear to extremities. light foxing of edges, browning of flyleaves and hinges just starting to crack; otherwise a very good set with clean interiors. Illustrated by portrait frontispieces with facsimile signatures, Vol. I, protected by tissue guard, and Vol. III, by text vignettes of all the fish species and their details and by ornamental tailpiece vignettes. Decorated by armourial title page vignettes, Vols. I-II. A systematic survey of British fish species by William Yarrell (1784-1856), Zoologist, which includes a Memoir of Yarrell and a List of his writings. The first edition was published 1835-36 and this expanded third edition is edited by Sir John Richardson (1782-1865), Scottish naval surgeon, naturalist and Arctic explorer. Yarrell also published A History of British Birds (1843 and later editions). This work is Illustrated with the splendid wood engravings of John Thompson, designed by Alexander Fussell.
